When i import a .STEP assy into SolidWorks, all the parts are completely black, even though the colors are not set to be black.
If i turn off Directional Lights 1 & 2, it looks fine, which i can't understand. the color of the directional lights is set to white.

Probably an ambient value set to or near to zero?
Anyway you can use "apply scene" to get predefined working lights in your scene:
This should get the lights defined in the scene in your model and light it up.

If it's from the import that it's colored black, change the color of the solid model to what you want unless you need the part to be that color. Changing the lighting will still keep the body black but highlite differently

I've imported models from vendors that I never assigned any colors to that come in black. Have always had to go in & remove the appearances & change the colors to what I needed. Plus as far as I know there is no way to set the color of the imported body to be a specific color when it is imported without changing the appearance after it is imported to remove the imported color.

Unless the OP sends a file, we can only guess what's happening. ;-)
As seen in the screenshot, there is color already (green).

..agree...it's the color assigned to the STEP file.

it seems that i have solved the issue, by changing some settings in my nVidia Control panel (im using a Quadro p500). e.g. setting the Power management mode to "Prefer Maximum performance" for SolidWorks.
