When will ampere be supported? I tried so hard to get my hands on a 3090 only to find a black viewport saying "no device found"
The system seems to think it's supported though...
Hello Noah.. I'm not sure.. but maybe you need to install or select the Radeon Pro Render?
Radeon Pro Render
For an NVidia card? No.
What does the Log says?
Wich version Viz do you have?
A new GPU driver is installed?
We plan to support Ampere with 2021 sp2.0.
Updating to support Ampere requires updates to CUDA libraries...which ultimately comes at the cost of dropping GPU support for older generation cards. When we supported RTX, we had to drop GPU acceleration support for Fermi generation cards. With the support of Ampere coming, we'll have to drop GPU acceleration of Kepler based cards.
While the former is not explicitly stated, the latter is called out in our 2021 release notes.
SOLIDWORKS 2021 SP1 Release Notes
Thanks Ron looking forward to it . Although do you Mean 2021 SP3? or is there some kind of transition when both will work?
the Release notes read to me like Kepler will still work in 2021 SP2? but not SP3 which is when i assumed Ampere support would start
Sorry. My bad.
SP2 will still support GPU acceleration on Kepler cards.
SP3 will no longer support GPU acceleration on Kepler cards, and will add support of Ampere cards.

...what percentage of SW users are currently using Kepler?
Thanks Ron I was hoping I was wrong as we are going to see the RTX a6000 (they have dropped the Quadro brand ) released for purchase in December and I am hearing in OEM systems Q1 2021 so going to be a bit of a change over period mid 2020. I definitely prefer changing mid release though 1 or 2 service packs in so those on older hardware get initial fixes and can hold their visualize on that service pack until they are able to upgrade. they can still upgrade and use SOLIDWORKS service packs independently.
I would suspect support for K series Quadro cards will go soon for SOLIDWORKS also, already the mobile cards are not supported due to NVIDIA ending driver support, but the K series Desktop series is still showing as supported,
I know still a good number using K series or older but for Visualize i think an upgrade is easier to justify! We did a comparison of a Dell Precision M6800 with Quadro K3100M from 2014/15 vs a new thin and light Dell Precision 5750 with Quadro RTX 3000 and it was night and day
Doing the Camaro at 50 passes with denoiser took 7 seconds on the Quadro RTX 3000 vs 108 Seconds on the K3100m. so serious gains of an upgrade between these generations! Similar tests for SOLIDWORKS assemblies showed manipulating complex models was approx 8x quicker, we are talking 10 FPS using the new graphics engine on the K3100M vs 80FPS on the RTX 3000. this is with an assembly of a few thousand components.
