I am using SW 2017, SP4.1
I have a virtual part within an assembly. The virtual part will have configurations. I am trying to rename the default configuration but it is greyed out.
Part 2 in the attached model.
I just learned something from Jeremiah Feist. If you slow double click the name you can rename it, but if you go to "Properties" the name is grayed out. Because of the grayed out name, I have always followed the round-about steps below - which is way more complicated!!
If the virtual part already has multiple configurations, in the main assembly make sure the configuration used is not the one you want to rename. If the configuration that you want to rename is used in the assembly, temporarily change it to a different configuration in the main assembly, rename it, and then change the configuration back to the one you want.
Or if you only have one configuration, add a new configuration with the name you want. Change to the new configuration in the assembly, and then delete the old configuration with the previous name.
works as expected in 2019 sp3.
I mentioned at the beginning of my post I have SW 2017. Opening in 2019 is not helpful.
best I can do .
and it is at least a little helpful - it strongly suggests that it is not an issue with the files themselves...
Is the assy open that references that config? If so, close it first.

as the post says - it is a virtual component. it cannot be open unless the assembly is open.
Melissa Newby, you can also use F2 to re-name a selected config (or anything else in the tree).
and if you right click on a tree item, there is a "Rename tree item" command.
Thanks! These are things that I feel I should have known, but somehow missed them.
For whatever reason, SolidWorks cooperated and I was able to slow click on the default and give it a name. I'm sure F2 would have also worked. Totally forgot to try this. Thank you.
