My student edition licence was activated 29/12/2019 but is now expiring 08/28/2020, which is 3 months early, what would be the reasons for this? I am an active degree seeking student and need to use SW to complete a project so the licence expiring is a disaster for me. Any relevant input from anyone will be appreciated.

Thank you for responding, it is appreciated as I have seen a few posts that have never been responded to.
I purchased the student edition from a VAR, the university at which I am a student does not provide CAD software. What you have said makes sense as my solidworks is expiring in August, however, the t&c's of the purchase state that the licence is valid for 1 year after installation.
I have contacted solidworks, to which they have responded and the issue is ongoing but not yet resolved.
Hopefully it turns out to be a mix up but if it isn't at least I know why, at which point I will mark your reply as correct.

Student licenses renew in July or August each year.
They are not 1 year from date of installation. They are per academic year.
Check with your instructor or university / school. If you are still a student your school should supply you with a new installation.
Before changing your version, You should save / backup all your work files and settings in a separate backup location (this is a good practice when updating or installing new software or update and just for safety incase your system has a problem)..
Before you install the new version, you must Fully Uninstall the version you have been using, then install the new version and activate it.
You can not have 2 student versions (different years) loaded at the same time on the same computer.
