How To Manage Checkout Across Multiple Machines (Work From Home)

We are rolling out the standard PDM system for our project, and everything seems to be working fine, but I had a question about checkout.

Specifically, because of the pendemic, most of us are working from home 2-3 days a week.

I can see a situation where (For example) a user is working on something on Monday at the office, and wants to keep it checked out for Tuesday at home.

Their PDM login is the same on both machines.

If I check out the part on Monday on machine 1, and at the end of the day I check it back in and keep the item checked out, what happens on Tuesday when I try to work on the part from machine 2?

The current version is on the PDM server, but can I check in/out the part from machine 2?

check outs are log-in AND computer specific

if they will be working from a different computer the next day, they will need to either remote desktop to the previous computer and check it in, or leave it checked in when they leave the office

They could also undo checkout from the other machine and immediately check it out again.

I did not know you could undo check out from a different machine. that would be simpler. as long as they are confident they checked in their latest work

Yes, even the admin can undo checkout of other users on any computer. This is nice when someone has a file checked out and is on vacation for a few weeks.

You are right, they do need to make sure they have latest changes checked in. Users could check in and keep checked out to prevent someone else from checking out the file overnight if users are in different time zones or work different hours.

I knew the admin could do it, but undoing you own checkout from another machine just has never come up here

In these cases we have a lot of companies setting up Remote Desktop connection back to their work PCs. This helps with the Home PC's not having the needed horsepower to run the applications and avoids issues with files being checked out to different machines. We also have some documentation on the best practices for working in a VPN environment for PDM use linked below.
