Why does smart dimension dimension the wrong line segment entirely?

I am unable to dimension the line I selected. The dimension extends or shifts to a different line.. Hopefully you can see what I am referring to in the images below. Running SW 2018 on an Intel Xeon CPU E3-1245 v6 @ 3.70 GHz. Ram 16.0 GB. 64 bit os x64 based processor

After trying to dimension correctly through selection, settings, smart dimension options I decided I would draw a completely new line and dimension that single straight line. You just cannot see it because it is grey. The line is highlighted orange/yellow in this first image. I want the bottom left corner to the blue line. It signals the point at which two sheets are sewn.

I have clicked the smart dimension tool and hovered the mouse over the line I want to dimension. The correct line highlights and all appears well.

As soon as I click the highlighted line the gods of cad decide to play their cosmic joke on me and it dimensions the wrong line. What in the world is going on?

Any thoughts? Any tips on searching for an answer for something like this?

I appreciate it everyone.
