I am trying to design a linear cam .

Right now the path of the follower is defined and constrained by assembly mates. I can drag the follower and watch it move along the desired path. The video shows the follower going through the material of the cam body as I drag the follower left and right.

I would like to cut the excess material from the cam body in such a way that if the follower is tangentially mated to the cam profile, it would follow the same exact path without the existing assembly mates that make it do so in the video.

You need to upload your file for someone to fix the assembly/parts for you.

Look here on How to Attach File Make sure you include assembly and all related parts and do zip your file before uploading. Also mention which version of SolidWorks you working on.

  Thank you for quick response and for trying to help with this problem.
  
  As you suggested, I am attaching the assembly from which previously attached video was taken. I hope the video uploaded OK and you got to see it.
  
  My stumbling point is that I do not know how to create a sketch or path by dragging a part within assembly.
  
  I also attached .jpg picture with freehand spline illustrating approximate path of the follower when I drag it within the assembly. The objective for me is to create a path/sketch that exactly coincides with the follower movement. I will then use that sketch to cut-extrude through cam body.

The only workaround that comes to my mind is position our mirror at different places. Create the different sketch or one sketch and using convert entity option, copy the position of Extrude3 of the mirror. This will give you several circles on the face of the Linear Cam bar. Now sketch a spline and define it in such a way that it touches each circle. Finally cut extrude.

Thank you for the work around. I actually thought of a similar way to accomplish this task. Unfortunately, if I subsequently change any dimensions or geometry, I would have to repeat the whole process again, and I wish I could avoid that if possible.

I am now thinking of 'Equation Driven Curve' as a possible workaround. Maybe I could use some dimensions as parameters, and if those change, I could rebuild the sketch quicker. What do you think?
