Quadro FX1800 performance

Hi everybody,

Ever since I upgraded to vista 64, I have been experiencing at least 10-15 crashes/restarts everyday. I do believe it is related with my Quadro FX1400 and I have been given the option of upgrading to Quadro fx1800.

Does anybody have any issues with this card? I would especially be interested in getting feedback about how well this card performs under vista 64.

what are your system specs so we can help you better? It's not always the video card.

we have a few FX1400's here, and they are generally stable cards. When we went to 2009, the drivers made a big deal, especially in the HP workstations we had.

When you get your APPROVED by SolidWorks driver, make sure you search by computer MFG first!! If you don't have what's offered, then get the latest Nvidia driver that is approved. I would suggest sticking with the driver that still has the icon for "Use the graphics card display settings for SolidWorks" if one is availible.

Although I have heard of some driver issues with the FX3800, I have not heard anything bad yet specifically about the FX1800. It should be a good card.

Too early for long-term reliability results, though.

Thank you for your replies. This is a computer we built more than 3 years ago, and it actually is a pretty good computer. Here are my specs:

AMD 64 X2 3800 (Dual Core - @ 2GHz)
Asus A8N SLI Premium board
Quadro FX1400
4GB Ram
2X Hitachi HDDs, (Raid 0)

I have not had any problems until I upgraded to Vista 64. I am having screen freeze problems, especially when I have a part and a drawing open at the same time, and if I go to a sketch and modify a dimension, screen freezes. The only thing I can do at that time, is to save, close all documents, and then reopen the part/drawing I need to work on. It is really dragging me down to work like this. And every 15-20 minutes of working with a single window open, I need to restart SolidWorks.

I have tried the approved driver from Solidworks, and did not make any difference. I am currently upgrading the driver from Nvidia site, as the new drivers are released, hoping that the issue might have been resolved, but no luck so far.

I know it is not guaranteed, but I am hoping that maybe upgrading to fx1800 will solve my problems.

  This is the same problem we are having with our FX1400's. According to my VAR, this a wide spread problem users are having with SW2009 and the FX1400's.
  
  After some testing , the solution appears to be more RAM (6 GB min) and a bigger video card (512 mb min). I've tried the FX1700 on a 64 bit system with 6 GB ram and all the issues dissappear. The FX1800 you are looking at will replace the FX1700 eventually, so you should be good to go with it.

Ahmet,

I think that the first thing that I would try is updating the bios. Certainly, they are not the same as they were 3 years ago when Vista wasn't even out. You can download directly from Asus and flash them, or if you fear of doing that, you can order from www.biosman.com and they will ship you the latest bios on an EPROM chip.

Interesting to hear that adding more RAM solved your problems even though I heard a lot of users having problems with FX1700. Unfortunately, I cannot add more RAM, since the motherboard supports 4GB max. I will definitely let you guys know if I upgrade to FX1800.

I have updated BIOS a while ago, currently it is not the latest version, but definitely not the one came with the motherboard either. I checked the ASUS website, and the later bios revisions are mostly related with support of the new processors and a few solutions related with power management. Also, it says I need to update some drivers (kinda complicated with vista 64) before upgrading the bios to the newest version, which scares me quite a bit, since I do not want to screw things up bad.

I was wondering if there are any users with ATI Firepro V5700 card. The price is about the same (around $450), and I have seen a lot of positive reviews about FirePros.

So, any users of ATI FirePro series, any comment is appreciated.

  I would really work to get your drivers and system bios up to date before getting a new gpu.
  
  Why is a driver update complicated with Vista x64? Works like anything other driver update, needing to make sure you have the correct drivers for your particular OS.

For WinXP 64bit system, please download and update chipset drivers V6.65 or later
For Win2k/2003 32bit system, please download and update chipset drivers V6.66 or later
For Win2003 64bit system, please download and update chipset drivers V6.66 or later

I honestly do not know if this would be an issue in Vista 64, and do not know what they mean when they refer to with V6.66. I guess it is nvidia chipset drivers, since this motherboard has Nvidia nForce 4 SLI chipset. I had found nforce driver 15.23 vista 64 bit drivers and installed it when I upgraded to vista 64, but I guess they refer to an older driver version.

This is what I was referring to when I said complicated. Maybe it will be fine if I update bios anyway, but I am still skeptical that this issue is bios related.

Install the latest chipset driver for your mobo and then flash the bios. not too hard if it does get messed up you can always upgrade your computer... new motherboard, cpu, ram, and gfx card go with the fx 580 instead of the 1800
with the 580 and mobo, cpu and ram you can make a decent system for ~$550. 1800 costs $450

also what was the reasoning to install vista 64 on this computer if you only can use a max of 4gb of ram?
