design study iterations and goals

I set a target, and a variable and give it a max and a minimum and an increment to work between...

Is this really all it is?

It just does every iteration and picks the best one?

...and only for the specific increment set in the variable?

Is that all it does?

Is it really dumber than the first CAD system I used in 1987?

Please tell me it can, somehow, use that set increment as a starting point, home in on the target, not bother running the whole FEA for increment values that are clearly not heading to the target, and then, having got to the closest increment value use the information it already has to make extra iterations to hit the target exactly - to  a specified number of decimal points.

Because for the large investment and annual maintenance cost I was expecting computer aided design, rather than manually driven computer calculations!
