Flexible parts afect assembly performance?

There was some questions around the office about whether or not setting an assembly to 'flexible' in a larger assembly would detrimentally affect SWX performance.

Has anyone had experience with this?

I did some searching on the intarwebnets but couldn't find anything specifically on this topic...

Correct Answer

Yes, it will effect the performance of the top level assembly. SolidWorks solves the mates in flexible sub assemblies, but not in regular sub assemblies.

Any idea to what degree? I would assume that the more complicated the sub assembly, or the more numerous the flexible components are, the greater the affect...

Yes, it does depend on complexity. As a general rule, for large assemblies, I try to limit the mates to solve to 100. Now, hardware will effect what limit you should set.
