History Tree blues

With SW 2014 I am building a bike frame that will be molded with carbon fiber.  Since there are very few shape limitations, I tried to make it as smooth as possible by lofting most of the tubes.  It is looking great, except when I try to edit or rebuild a shape.  Quite often, on the rebuild, the loft fails, and many steps in the tree before it fail.   As an alternative, I delete the lofted feature so I can build an entirely new one, but features fail on the other end of the part that do not share any surfaces or planes.  The history tree seems to be working against me.

The features are all merged, that's required to create fillets between them.

Is there a way to construct a model, so I can change or delete lofted features without all of those earlier features failing.

I don't understand why previous features fail when there appears to be no relations between them.
