When doing a "get latest" it gets the latest of too many files

Here is a simplified version of the issue:

Let's say I have a model of a pipe that has 100 configurations.  Each configurations has a drawing referenced to it and each drawing has a pdf referenced.  If I were to get latest of a pdf it would get the latest the drawing plus the model along with all the other drawings attached to the model.

It gets more complex with assemblies. I can understand getting the latest of each component to the configuration that my drawing is attached to but why is it getting the latest component of every configuration along with the latest of every drawing for every component of every configuration?

The problem comes in with people working from home or traveling.  They will vpn in and only want to look at the latest pdf of a drawing and their connection might not be the best.  What should be a few seconds turns into several minutes or longer.

Yes, you can deselect all of the other files so they won't "get latest" but that can be a pain and if you forget to do that you end up wasting a lot of time.

Is there anyway to turn this "enhancement" off?
