I really must be losing my mind. I was changing the color of some components in an assembly model today. Worked great! Then, later I went to do the same thing. WTF??! Why can't I change the color of components?? Oh, I'm in a sectioned view. But, wait, I swear I was in a sectioned view when I colored the other components earlier.
Well, this begs the question - Why can't I change component colors when in a sectioned view (in an assembly model)?
Anybody else experience this problem?
Right, but I wonder why? With some assemblies, I spend a lot of time working in section views. I either have to exit the section view, or make the model the active document to change it's color. But, if I want to change it's color only at the assembly level, then I'm left with only one option - exit the section view. Now, wouldn't it be nice to be able to edit color while the section view is active? I can edit all other appearances (Transparency, hide/show, display type) when in section view, so why not color? Right?

You should be able to edit color/appearance in section view but you need to use "graphics-only section"

What is the difference on a "graphics only" section and a non-graphics only section?
This is all the help says: "Provides faster results with limited selection capabilities."

For one thing (copied from help):
"You cannot select a sectioned face or edge. Retain the section cap color in a graphics-only section view. Pixels that lay within the same plane as the section plane or face are not hidden."
Basically, the graphics-only section doesn't actually cut through the parts but it shows it grahically. You can see some of this when hovering over parts in the graphics-only section view (and "Dynamic highlight from graphics view" is turned on), and when selecting sectioned faces:

This actually works! Too bad I rarely use "Grahics-only" section views. They have some drawbacks that I can't recall at the moment.
You can assign a shortcut to call the section view properties and switch between normal and graphics section as needed.

While setting up the section view, scroll all the way to the bottom.

Just found out today.
I was using config and actually section/cut the part/assembly.
That sounds like a lot of work, but I bet it would result in improved performance. My system gets a little sluggish in section view.
Section a part or assembly is simple.
Just draw a rectangle and cut.
You can cut partial.
I think its easier to measure since you get an edge and face.
You can assign a key to call properties window for section view so when you are already in a section view you can press a key and get section view properties without exiting section view.
Oh, I see. I forgot about the modify section view command - I definitely need to get in the habit of using it more. I guess I was thinking you meant assign a shortcut key to toggle the graphics only section view on and off.

there is no possibility to change the color/appearance when a section view is active. Even the functions for this are hidden. And when you try to drag and drop an appearance an a part, you'll get the message that this isn't possible.
