negative distance values

Its been to long a wait, when will negative value functionality be a reality is SW (currently using SW2019).

DS should know by now that the simple improvement of allowing negative values will be revolutionary for all things dimension'd; sketches, reference geometry (planes) , Mates, Configurations and Simulation application are improved instantly, this would be a game changer.

Biggest game changer in SW history, this is not an exaggeration, controlling dist across origin, flip-floppin, back and forth, - to + , basically a controllable/configurable "distance flip"...WHAT!

Please SW software dev team, please finally allow negative distances in all SW distance inputs (without becoming absolute after a forced flip). There is infinite potential of application improvement possibilities with this.

P.S. Inventor has this functionality! Autodesk doesn't have much functionality better than SW, this is the most import one they have had for a very long time.

SPR 59277: All numerical dimensions should allow negative values

Share, like, lets get some traction on this.

Handy, more convenient, but hardly a game changer. With some construction geometry etc. you can keep all your dimensions from having to flip around.

I don't think you can show me a plane in one configuration on one side of an origin, and in another configuration on the other side. So yes, negative values would be a game changer.

Hi Erik

When I need a negative dimension I use a Global variable where they're allowed.

It's easy enough to get pretty much any result you'd like to achieve with the help of an IIF equation.

Here's an example for a plane as you describe.

Here's the equations

In this example Plane 1 rotates about an axis thro the origin, then plane 2 is offset from Plane 1.

Maybe it helps... for me it's been very useful.

Your doing a rotation, i would need a translation because you cannot configure the normal to plane arrow to flip back and forth.

This work around my be useful to some peeps in some instances, just not for my situation.

Is there a way to accomplish a translation with equations using an offset plane?

Sorry.. maybe I'm being dim but whats the difference between a rotation and a flip?

Do you mean you want the normal direction to stay the same way?

If so you can define the plane by a directionless entity, here the same approach but with a sketched endpoint.

sorry i meant under options, the flip normal check box arrow is not controllable, with the rotate plane that arrow would be facing left and then right when rotated 180deg.

But with the sketch endpoint set up, it looks like the normal arrow stayed the same way, accomplishing a translation across center without extra reference??

That's decent, so what did you do equation wise for this one?

And you can have it translate to either side depending on specified configuration?

Are you suppressing and unsuppressing different equation?

Your solution is a better work around, thanks for your input.

Allowing negative values would make a workaround obsolete, and would give more options and flexibility to the user.

Hopefully we will see this enhancement at some point.

It would be very useful in configurations. Right now you can not have configurations that change a dimension to a negative value. Sometimes you simply can not redimension the sketch and redo the configuration table to work around this.

please vote for SPR above, there was 3 pages of these kind of requests already on the enhancement request list. Please search for "negative values" and vote for all of them, if you have the time. I just posted the one above because it says all dim inputs. All other ones are specific use scenarios, 3D Sketch, Simulation, etc.

its a decent work around, I cant say it doesn't work. But you need an extra stuff to create an extra reference.

Wouldn't it be slick to use -ve and +ve distance input for a offset distance plane?

So maybe not revolutionary but would be really helpful in simplifying things and add more flexibility.
