We use a ERP system where part descriptions are limited to 40 characters long, so when creating names we have to manually count the characters within the part/assembly property field. I was wondering if there was a macro or workflow to achieve this/set a limit? Appreciate there are workarounds using excel etc but wondered if there was a way to keep this within Solidworks.
Any advice or help on this would be great.

You need a SOLIDWORKS add-in that hooks into the event handler. More details:

You technically have three different document types to deal with.
Every time a custom property is added, it will need to validate its name.
The custom property rule is not the issue. The issue is the document management within the sw session. This add-in need to be able to keep track of active documents (and potentially references too) and hook into the active model only and release those that are not longer active, suppressed....
Might be worth the investment if it's a pain in the a**! Who knows?

Are we talking about a custom property named Description? For my , I found out the limit is 1023 chars, so 40 is annoyingly low What happens when the description is too long, does it cause an error when you send the data to the ERP system? Or does it just get cut off, so you lose valuable data?
There are many times and places to check and edit a custom property. It depends when you want to check if (and possibly be notified) I guess. You could use:
