So I have additional keys in my mouse, I would like to use them as shortcuts. Not the mouse gestures thing. The mouse gestures is nice but I want to literally assign a key the same way you assign keyboard hotkeys. Is that possible? I haven't seen that option.
you can. depends what mouse brand it is. but usually they have it's own software that let's u do this kind of steup.
Valery, you can absolutely do that but typically not through SW ...
I have a Windows Explorer mouse which has two additional thumb buttons and the wheel itself has an extra function (click select) for a total of three extra buttons. The functionality is limited as they only see whatever "Microsoft" says they can but it is still helpful. I cannot speak for other brands/models but I would have to assume the functionality is similarly limited. Even then, I still have an undo/redo/escape/enter and a few other obscure functions that work through the additional buttons.
Take care to check and double check the use of your mouse carefully before and after installing any secondary drivers or additional mouse software. Some programs definitely don't play well with each other. Even my Microsoft certified mouse didn't cooperate right out of the gate but with a little messing around it works just fine.
I have Logitech MX Master, I will try to download its driver and see what I come up with, but I'm skeptic... seems like it's something basic that Solidworks should support though

I had until recently Logitech G502, where i had set buttons, Enter, Esc, S, and few others.
So fortunately I found out you can define Logitech's MX Master per software, so this problem is solved. I still think SW should have it built-in not having to force users to go to the manufacturer's drivers to find a solution, even B-rated video games let you do that

How many different brand of mouse are out there?
How many different ways to program the extra buttons?
How many has an API for other program to use?
How much time you want SW to use programming mouse instead of improving SW?
I use a 15 buttons mouse.
So? That's irrelevant. Many video games these days recognize buttons no matter the brand or how many buttons. All you need to do is go into the settings and press the button when you're prompted, it will be recognized. Would love to see it work the same way in SW
Submit it to the Top Ten list, when it opens again in December.
Where do I see it?
You have to wait until Solidworks opens the Top Ten list again. They open it sometime in the Fall/Winter for submissions, then close it to submissions and open it for voting, then close it and remove it from viewing prior to the annual "World" event.
Just do a search for "top ten"...you'll find plenty of chatter about it.
You can also submit it as an improvement/enhancement request, if you have a paid support account.

The SPR system is the primary driver for directing SW resources, there's no point waiting for the TTL.

After my talk at 3DEXPERIENCE World (on an unrelated topic), someone came up afterwards to share these same issues, and I plan to investigate this further. I do a fair amount of computer gaming myself (I use a Razer Lancehead Tournament), and I know that most games provide good built-in support for devices with lots of controls, and it sounds like we have room for improvement in SOLIDWORKS.
Also, Dave Laban, thanks for sharing the SPR's - they will help with my research...and you're right, SPR's (especially those with 'customer hits') are an important part of project prioritization.

Yes, you certainly can and I have a few Logitech mice where I take advantage of the additional buttons (like forward and reverse on the left side wall). Looks like other here have adequately answered your question.
Two of my favorite SW functions that I map to my mouse because I use them so often are Toggle Show/hide types and the "S" key shortcut menu. The process is as follows:

One thing I do when assigning a keyboard shortcut in Solidworks is to make an alternate shortcut than the default. In my case, for the 's' key shortcut, I also have a 'ctrl+alt+shift+s' shortcut in Solidworks that invokes the same command, but won't write a 's' if I inadvertently press the mouse shortcut while in the open/close dialog box.
Also, thank you very much Bret for looking into this. I've been using either Logitech software or X-Mouse as a work around to assign Solidworks commands to my thumb buttons for years. It would be great to not have to worry about the above issue by having Solidworks be able to natively map to these buttons. For me, having the thumb buttons mapped to my favorite Solidworks commands is the best use of those buttons, but it would also be nice to be able to use them as the default forward and backwards navigation buttons when browsing the open/close dialog box. That seems to be the only bad part about mapping the commands though a third party software.
