I haven't done much surfacing in Solidworks. I was able to get this drawn in a way that works, but i feel like there is a better approach. Any suggestions are welcomed.
it seems like you felt in love with "Filled Surface". But what about "Planar Surface" for the bottom and "Boundary Surface" / "Lofted Surface" for the side surfaces?!
If needed, you could add some more guide curves to the 3D sketch...
Heiko is correct in suggesting planar surface for a flat surface and boundary/loft features. filled surface gives you terrible rebuild times for what you're trying to do.
I tried boundary surfaces and lofted surfaces, but couldn't get them to work. Maybe having the bottom surface planar made the difference. I don't do much surface work, and almost none in SW. I just kept beating on it until I got something that worked. Filled surface was what I was able to make work reliably.
Thanks for your assistance.
Can you attach any screenshot?
How do you create the groups for the boundary surface feature?
Use the "Selection Manager". When the feature is active, right-click in the graphics area and choose it from the context menu. A small ribbon will appear. Now you can select manual, open loops or closed loops.
