keep both the model and the drawing open when updating the names and there should not be much of a problem. See Glenn's link I think that will help with fixing the problem you have right now.
If you looking to keep revision controls of models I would seriously look at getting PDM or using it if you already have it available. with out PDM keeping up revision control of a model becomes a major mind twister and it is really easy to not update a rev when you make a slight change to the model.
The simplest way to do this is to open part and drawing, save drawing with a new name, then save part with a new name, then resave the drawing. I realize that's one more save than the minimum, but it keeps me from making mistakes.
You also should have received a warning. If not check to be sure you have not turned it off.
Did you change file name of the model?
