Whenever I try to save my favorite materials, the save option is greyed out. I even ran SolidWorks as administrator but still no luck. Any advice please?
Edit material in part, select material in list to add, add to favorites.

In 2019 SP3, if I add a material to that list and choose Close, it appears in the list for me. The Apply and Save are greyed out for me, too, but, it still appears in the list.
Typical SW ONE and TWO or Consistently Inconsistent Solidworks UI stuff...
that save button is for saving changes to the material database(s) - not the favorites. just hit close.
Chris, I am doing that, but no luck. The material list reverts back to the original. Jeremiah, hitting close does nothing.
Then you will likely need to involve your VAR and/or IT dept. as it appears you do not have write access to where the favorites are stored.
I agree with Jeremiah.
I got the VAR to check on it. Actually the my personal file name had ( ) in the file name. So due to the brackets it was not working. When I re-saved the file with brackets, it works now.
When I re-saved the file without* brackets, it works now.
Greetings, guess I'm late (my first post), but I'll leave this answer anyway....
Your "favorite material list" is not part of the material database file and that's why you cannot "save" the preferences you set. The favorite list is instead stored in the Windows registry at the address: "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\SolidWorks\SOLIDWORKS [insert-year-here]\Material"
It behaves like SolidWorks options and favorites are "saved" when you close the CAD (-> Windows registry gets updated).
Usually, first cause of settings not being applied is program crashes or closure by killing the process in the Task Manager (in case of hangups). So in case of problems, try checking the said registry key first.
I guess that sharing favorite materials between users can be done by exporting a set of registry keys and then load them on each machine.
