Lofted Bends

What is the point of lofted bends if you aren't able to add flanges and other sheet metal features to it. I have a lofted bend that has a straight profile and and a curved profile. After I loft it, I am unable to add any other sheet metal features to the lofted bend. I get the following when I try to pick an edge to create a flange: "Selected edge is not on planar faces".

  I have searched the forum and found that many people have run into this issue with no one offering an explanation, if this is a documented limitation or if there is a work around.
  
  I did update your file slightly hoping that it would work as a sheet metal part should but no luck. What I did was add two more points to the lower sketch as lofts like to have the same number of points in each sketch.
  
  Not sure if your VAR could help any but they may be able to explain why..
