How do I work with laser scan data? Received an iges file from scanner which is really just point data. When i open i do not see any points. I think I can get point data file from it if needed. if so what type file is best?
after I get that data how do I work with it to get a surface from it?

Solid Works is not the right program to process point clouds. That is a huge can of worms.
Look at other software depending on exactly what you want to do withe the clouds:
Geomagic, Imageware surfacer, Rapid form, Cyclone, Even Rhino can do some small cloud editing.
The real problem with laser scans is no corners. And all corners need data points cleaned up.
You have to extract surfaces, grow them, and intersect them to create any corners.

In the IGS import options, check the box for Free Curves/Points entities
