Exclude parts and assemblies from copy tree based on variable

There is an old post related to this topic, but I want to start a new, more specific thread.

We are currently implementing PDM professional. We have decided to differentiate between our standard and non standard parts. This is done via a workflow that changes the permissions on the file and also sets a variable "CUSTOM".

Due to experiences our PDM implementation guy had at another company, we do not want to create a separate folder for standard parts. The nature of our business is that parts often change from custom to standard.

I want to know if there is a way to exclude components from copy tree based on the value of a variable, rather than a folder. This would allow me to run copy tree on an assembly, and generate new part numbers (serial number) for all the custom parts, without creating copies and renaming standard parts.

Just to emphasize, we don't want to create a separate folder for standard parts, but want to exclude from copy tree based on a variable.

Thanks!
