independent mirrored components possible?

I have a component in an assembly that I need to mirror. At present the components are true mirrors. However, once I mirror the component I want to add features, additonal mounting holes and a pocket for a sensor that is not necessary on the parent part.
What is a good method for achieving this?
Can I add the necessary features to the mirror without affecting the parent?
Can I create a truly independent mirrored part?

Not sure if this helps you but, the other day I created an independant left handed hinge from a right handed one by making a mirrored part so I could export it. Then re-imported and ran them through feature recognition. It was a simple enough part but we didn't want the right/left files linked to each other.

I don't know if SW has a more diredt way of mirroring a part to an independant opposite part file with editable features or not? I usually end up reversing feature directions and hole locations to make independant opposing parts on simpler parts.

  I used to do it all the time. Just mirror your part. then add cuts, extrusions, whatever you want to the mirrored part without affecting the origional.
  
  If you need to make additional cuts to the origional part without it affecting the mirror, use configurations.

An alternative, and IMO cleaner way, is to open the part and use the Insert > Mirror Part tool, selecting the Break link to original part option.
