I just watched a video of a 3D sketch being made on the side of a structual steel part with out adding a plane.
But when I tried it with the student version it's not working the same.
Am I doing something wrong or is this trick only for paid versions of SW ?
Anyone know ?

Was it Rapid Sketch?
If so this is not a 3d sketch but it allows you to sketch on lots of faces and produce multiple sketches (I think??)
Can't say I've ever used it.
No I did not select the rapid sketch tool at the time I was trying to make the sketch but I will do back and try that again.

Seems to work fine for me.
You need to select the face you want to be drawing on before drawing the line;
it should then automatically create an On Plane relation with the line and face, see attached pic.

1st. I keep viewing responses from my "IN BOX" and I'm not seeing any attachments. What or where do I go to over come this problem ?
2nd. I was able to get the 3D sketch to stick to the side plane of the part. I always selected the face first, but then I noticed I had to hold tab while drawing the entity. It seems to act strange but it stuck. I was able to then get it to connect to the on plane relation at the next part.

Left click on the discussion name in your Inbox (or click on it with your scroll wheel to open it in another page if you don't want to close your Inbox) to take you directly to it. You'll be able to see attachments there.
