Say I have a 10 pin connector. I have inserted a symbol for 5 of those pins (A-E). Now I want to change that symbol to show 6 of those pins (A-F). I don't want to lose the mnemonic info. How do I update the symbol? I thought at one point I could delete the symbol and reinsert it and it would keep the data associated with it. However, I just tried that and I lost the data.
Hello Lynne - wanting to 'change' a dynamically-created symbol (whether for a PLC or a Connector) is a common thing, and although Solidworks has added the capability to change the *configuration* (eg, instructions) for the creation of these symbols and then update the symbols with the Symbol->Update command, if you want to change which circuits are included in the symbol you still have to delete and re-insert.
This is easily done if you've got your Component Tree visible, with a workflow of delete, right-click the connector component, and select [Insert Connector] to get back into the circuit selection and dynamic symbol insertion.
If you're using Edit Symbol Terminals to store mnemonic info, it *should* still be there after a delete and re-insert. Using SWE 2019 SP4 or SWE 2020 SP0 I was able to add that info to a symbol for a connector, delete all representations of that connector (after making it a permanent component), and re-insert a dynamic symbol for it and all the mnemonic info came right back.
Alternately, you can add signal info to equipotentials or use cable core info, and make a Dynamic Connector configuration that pulls that data rather than the mnemonic to display on the connector symbols, and that will help solve the problem of disappearing descriptive data as well.
