Gas spring mating conditions

I have an assembly of a gas spring that I want to use in an assembly. I have two configurations, compressed and extended. The strut has concentric and distance constraints. The ball studs on the ends have concentric constraints. I'd like to be able to swivel the ball studs and rotate the strut as needed to position it in the assembly. I've positioned the strut in my assembly, but I cannot do anything to change the orientation of the studs or strut. What am I doing wrong?

I'm using Solidworks 2017 on an HP ZBook 15 G3, Intel i7-6820HQ CPU @ 2.7Ghz, 32GB RAM, Windows 7 Enterprise.
