Swept cut on tube fails for no apparent reason

So I have a swept cut using a solid, I've tried profile cuts and a few others and this seems to be the only one that behaves even remotely well. I'm trying to cut a track in a cylinder but the rate of travel isn't strictly linear (z/theta), it's mostly close but not quite. Anyway, the curve doesn't loop back on itself or do anything that's particularly complex but I can't get it to sweep along an axis-if I really pare down the track it'll run a minimum twist but that won't work for me mechanically. I've got another curve using the exact same technique and it works fine. Anyone have any ideas? I've used this with constant rotation in the past and it's never been an issue.
