Welding seperate parts in assembly

Afternoon all,

just wondering if its possible to create a physical weld between two separate parts in an assembly?

The highlighted part below is separate to the rest and I want to create a weld between the two where they meet, mainly as I will be sending this model to a customer and would rather not show them exactly how the product is manufactured..

This will be sent in a STEP format but even after saving the assembly as a part and then turning it into a STEP, it is still obvious where the join is..

You can't add material in an Assembly (as far as I know). How about saving the Assembly as a Part before converting it to STEP? Then you could add a feature joining the bodies into one.

Thanks Glenn, I had the idea to save as a part (which is what we will end up doing anyway) but for some reason I still cant get the weld to work, do the parts need to be absolutely perpendicular with no gap? I would have thought some tolerance would be okay

Try connecting the bodies with a Sweep instead of weld.

Save the whole assembly as a multibody part.

Modify as you want. Combine all bodies before export.

How you make the box is nothing special, from the screen shot anyway.

Any fab shop worth its paid know how to do that.

Why waste your time?

Thanks Frederick, I will give this a try and get back to you.

And yes I agree, its not complex but my director is a little worried about design IP as we are currently in the process of creating a 3D portal on a hosting website where customers can quickly download a model and see if our products are suitable for them before a getting a quote from us...

I understand his concern but also know that if somebody wants to steal a design that badly, they will find a way around

You can download electrical box models from McMaster Carr, Hammond and other NEMA enclosure manufacturers.

Now if you have other components that has IP, replace them with a overall sized box.

In part, you have all the features to fill up the gap, extrude, sweep, revolve etc.

Cheers Dan, this is the first thing I thought of but wont work on a part for some reason, I'm guessing its due to the faces not being exactly perpendicular, will play about and see what can be done though
