CONFIGURATIONS

I haven't worked with configurations in a number of years and I think I'm missing something, let me see if I can explain this correctly. What I'm trying to do is create a model with different configurations representing the various machining sequences that will be performed. in sequence 20 the part will be a simple bar stock cut-off. In sequence 30 that part will have a shoulder machined onto it. in sequence 40 maybe a groove cut into it. in the next sequence maybe the O.D. is turned to it's finished diameter. then some face holes drilled...etc. I would like to step through the configurations and see the machining process. how do I do this? I'm pretty sure there is a way but I am missing it somewhere.
