Check if the file attributes (go to window explorer and go to
the file location. RMB on the file and select properties.) are set
to read only. If yes then un check the the box for read
only.
Are you working on files at the same time as someone else is?
Whenever one person opens a file, it's locked. Other people can
still open the file, but it will be read-only.
Are you using a PDM? I know with PDM Workgroup I will forget
to take ownership at times when I take something out which will
open it read-only. I usually find this after I made a bunch of
changes. C'est la vie.
Your "c'est la vie" tends to imply that you are throwing out your
changes when you discover you don't have ownership. All you have to
do is take ownership of the part in PDMWorks. Of course, this
doesn't work if someone else has ownership, unless you can talk
them into giving it up.
Your question implies that you aren't notified when opening
that the file is read-only. You might try going under Tools ->
Options and under the Systems Options tab, at the bottom there's an
"Advanced" category that shows which error messages won't appear.
I'd bet dollars to doughnuts that you have something in that list
about read-only files.
Also when you are working just look up at the main solidworks
application header bar. You see the name of the active file you are
working on if there is a [read-only] after the file - guess what!!
Also watch for the * (asterisk) - that one means you have modified
the file in some way such that now it is different in RAM than it
was on disk and would like to be saved at some point in time (at
your convenience)
There is a very under utilized tool in solidworks - in your task
pane on the right, there is an option to see 'Open in SolidWorks' -
black indicates read-write, orange indicates read-only and bold in
either case means the same as the asterisk above.
There is also one option to check - system - External References -
Open referenced documents with read-only access, a great thing to
check when working in a group with shared files (ie no PDM). But
kind of annoying if you have other controls - like a PDM. Checked
this will open the model read-only when you open the drawing, same
for all assembly children by default....
I work in the field of Fire fighting vehicles.
I need drawings in format solidworks or Parasolid (.X_T) of 3
vehicles of Ford Motor Company in 3D.
a Crew Cab , an Extended Cab and a Regular Cab.
They are "F" Series vehicles ( Cab and Chassis )
I contact the Ford Company but they do not give or sell their
drawings.
I am wondering if it is possible to find those drawings on the
internet.
You're not unconscious, the software is. This started happening when I was still running 2009. Thought it would stop with 2010. So, I went to System Options>External References>Open referenced documents with red-only access. Checked it, because it was NOT checked. Hit OK. Then, went back and unchecked it and hit OK. It stopped saying everything was opened read-only. Someone at Solidworks should check their updates and new software for internal software defaults.

I investigated your suggestions but the evidence may have been lost when Rx changed my settings to default.
I have used that unplanned opportunity to install 2009 and I will monitor the indicators you suggested.
