Hello All,
I am using the split line tool to split a large non-circular ring into 10 sections.
The split line tool is adding its own hidden split line to the feature, and I am not sure how to prevent this from happening.
Attached images show the following:
1. The non-circular ring and its 10 section split line drawing with one line at 9oclock set as a construction line to highlight the issue
2. A close up of one of the 10 section split lines at approx 10oclock behaving normally
3. A close up of the 10 section split line at 9oclock behaving strangely
4. Editing the feature which shows the split line at 9oclock inserting itself
Does anyone know why this may be happening and how to prevent it?
The 10 split lines are perpendicular to the centreline sketch which drives the rest of the model's features.
Thanks in advance!
What you are using is the Split feature, which is different than the "Split Face" command which I think most people call Split Line
Not to be pedantic about it but I mostly make that distinction because I prefer to set each up differently
For Split feature, I recommend to extrude surface(s) to perform the split. So in your case that would mean, take the sketch with 10 line segments, and Insert -> Surface -> Extruded Surface to a sufficient depth that it completely cuts the part.
Then, select all those Surfaces in your Split feature as the Trim Tool.
This is a few more steps but (in my experience) a surefire way to get "what you see is what you get" with the Split results.
When using Split feature based on a sketch, you are asking SOLIDWORKS to project out those lines and hopefully figure out all the right intersections, which it does most of the time (and seems like it should in this case) but I would say it's probably less foolproof. I've also seen it do weird things with centerlines / construction geometry as seems to be what's happening to you.
