I may be wrong but there doesn't seem to be a way in assembly mating to select an offset that is negative in relation to the desire mating reference, as there is in mating in parts (by entering a negative offset or using the mate alignment switches). Which means extra time spent unneccesarily strategizing and moving parts beforehand into the positive quadrant. Is there some way around this?

You can add the mate and then double click on the mate dimension and then revert the positive number to negative, without editing the mate.
