How to copy a surface in an assembly from one part to a new part?

I've completed the first essentials course and am getting my feet wet with top-down design. I need to create parts from geometries of exiting parts.

Is there a way to copy surfaces from on part in an assembly to a new part?

I am creating masking and tooling for a coating operation where the masking will cover some areas of a molded part but not others and also act as a holding fixture during the operation. To do this I need to take geometry from the existing part as a starting point for the fixture. I began simply building off the existing part by offsetting and thickening surfaces but these fixtures will be made of multiple pieces so I think I need to create them as an assembly. However, I haven't figured out how to copy a surface into a new part within an assembly.

Are there any resources or lessons dealing with this subject that would set me on the right track?

Input is much appreciated!
