spur gear mate help

hey guys i tried searching but couldnt really find an answer. i'm building a hand winch in solid works and i have everything done except mating the gears. i know theres a gear mate option, but how do i use it? what faces should i select? ive tried messing around with it, but it wont rotate right. thanks

In the SolidWorks Help under the Search tab search for Gear Mates.

Also do a search on YouTube for SolidWorks Gear Mates. There are a couple videos there on the subject.

What version and SP of SolidWorks are you using? Please add the info to your forum signature so the rest of the forums members know. This will get you more specific help.

Check the "Gear Mates" thread in this same category. Mating gears is as sample as picking a circular edge from each entity and then entering the ratio. If you would like further assistance I can attach a sample.

okay thanks guys i figured out how to mate the gears (then i read your response dave) and now my problem is the teeth are overlapping eachother. they spin fine together but the teeth wont stay lined up. how can i go about fixing it?

edit: nevermind, i was playing around with the ratios and got it to work

  I was surprised how easy the gear mates option worked the first time i used it. I was a 4 month SW newbie and i found the gears on 3D content central. i had to scale them down and line align them. I was so impressed once i used the gear mate how the gears moved.

Before applying the Gear Mate, set the two gears in such a fashion that on rotation the teeth should not overlap. Then apply Gear mate.

  Colter, keep in mind that the gear mate only rotates the parts per a ratio - it doesn't do any kind of interference checking or motion analysis. You can have 2 chafts not even touching each other and get the same results.

If you are creating a wench, are you sure you actually want a gear mate? Gear mates can create only circular motion. Perhaps you really want a rack-and-pinion mate, where rotation causes linear motion. However, there are problems with this sort of mate, so you can't really depend on it for design. But, for illustration, and trying things out, it may be good enough for you.

The important thing to remember is that you only want one rack-and-pinion mate to be involved in the moment. Forget trying to rotate one gear and have a series of gears and other rack-and-pinion mates. But, you may be able to mate the first gear to the linear motion of the end object. Just make sure the end object is constrained, except for one degree of freedom that it can slide along.

When modeling gears, I usually model a thin cylinder that I label "pitch diameter" and color a transparent yellow. This surface is the cylinder I mate my gears to, and would allow the gear mate to automatically know the gear ratio. (though, as I am sure you have already discovered, you can manually enter a ratio).
