What is a good way to turn a 3D wireframe into a solid? Technique question.

You ever see the lattice, wireframe, or 3D sketch behind CGI or other animations? Maybe something from the '3D' tools of autoCAD? I occasionally use something like that to make complicated parts, but was wondering if there is a better way to go about it than this;


1. Make the 3d lattice.

2. Make sketches for each flat area of the lattice, and turn them into surfaces with the filled surface tool.

3. Use the knit surface tool to combine all these surface bodies, and use the option to make it into one one solid body.
