Can't locate Swept Boss Feature while in Assembly mode.

Hey all, new to solid-works.

I'm following Solidworks Triger Seti Tasarımı Timing Set Design - YouTube tutorial for a basic timing belt design. At the 34.55 mark, he uses what looks like (it's in Turkish) the swept, boss/base feature while in assembly mode. I can only locate that feature in parts mode. How do I get access to it?

Correct Answer

Hi Paul,

At 33:15 in the video, the user edits a part in the context of the assembly so then the part commands become available and all features that are created while editing the part are created within the part level, not the assembly level.

Thanks for the reply.

Follow up question. When attempting to sweep the belt sketch (as depicted at 34:55 in the tutorial), I receive this alert message: "Please select from the solid body of the component you are editing." I've deleted and recreated the belt outline and sketch several times following the tutorial, but cannot get past this error.

I am guessing the Sketch3 profile and the belt sketch are not in the same part file. They must be in the same part file to make a sweep from them.

Thanks for the quick reply, Jim. I'm on day three of trouble shooting this issue (class project due Monday).

Belt sketch (TimingBeltGuide -> derived) and sketch3 are under the same part. The derived belt guide was created IAW the tutorial.

I'm unsure what else to try.

Perhaps you have multiple sketches on top of one another and it is picking the one in the higher level context. Try opening the part in its own window to be able to see just the geometry in that part.

I rearranged the sketches, moving plane1 and sketch3 above the derived belt sketch and still received received the same error.

How do you locate the file for a part created in assembly mode if you want to open it in a different window?

The yellow icon at the next level up in the tree with the Belt1-1.... name is the part. Simply click on that and then the Open icon on the context toolbar that pops up.

I would suggest you do some of the tutorials from the Help menu to get a better understanding of parts and assemblies. These are fundamental to using SOLIDWORKS.
