All the units in the document are set to Metric, and status bar is still showing units in inches.

That was my initial thought as well, but...
I would say "Double- check!".
OK, I tested out a few things and I can get this to happen.
I will bet that you are in an assembly and are editing (in context) a component.
I have found that, if I switch my assembly units to say, metric, then edit (in context) a part that has its units in inches, the status bar will still display what the assembly units are set to.
