Hello. I'm doing this project for a masters degree and I'm trying to add 2 mm of outward thickness to my model, but I keep getting the error 'Unable to Thicken the surface'.
I've 'Checked' my model several times and it says that is fine. I've also tried to 'offset' the whole thing but it only works with no more than 4 faces at a time. I'm pretty new in solidworks, can you please help?
I'm sending the file.
Interestingly, I can get it to thicken to 2 mm on the inside and the outside.
Your minimum radius of curvature is 0.000199061 mm. It might not be a stretch to think that has something to do with why you can't thicken the surface.
Personally, I've done this kind of work - that is, working from sloppy scans.
One thing you can do is to set up several planes, get intersection curves, and smooth them out manually, then loft a better finished shape. I think using manual approximations and eyeballing stuff is the key to getting a real surface you can work with.
EDIT: I see your Delete Face got rid of the tight curvature. Still, you can see the two hard lines. Those mean that the faces on either side of the edges are not tangent to one another. When you try to thicken stuff that is almost but not quite tangent, things get weird. Bottom line is that you've got sloppy scan data, and the best thing to do is to clean it up. Or manually approximate it, as mentioned above.
