If I knew what it was called I would search for it. Coworker just asked how to turn on the feature for a part to show in the tree when he selects it on the monitor.
I thought it would be dynamic highlighting but he said that option is greyed out. What should I be looking for?

No, that didn't do it either. When I unselected that box I would have to scroll the tree to the part but it is highlighted. He is not even getting it to highlight. He did have it checked already though.
Is your co-worker selecting a face on the Part? It doesn't work if you select an edge or vertex.
Also, prior to SW2019 it doesn't work if the Part is in a folder.

Interesting, We use folders a lot and it appears to work for us, SW 2018 SP4.

I rarely use folders high up in the tree (for components that are directly inserted and mated), but occasionally put component patterns in folders. It didn't work for those.
If Dynamic Highlight is grayed out, then I would say that he has large assembly mode going, or he has Use Software OpenGL checked.

We found the problem. He was in that goofy Large assembly Mode and it doesn't work there.
LAM does allow a model to open quicker, but that is the only good thing I have found there. Once open I am usually unable to do what I need.
LAM takes a different approach. It seems to have been made for you to take several projects, and then incorporate them together.
Like if you are working on a car, you would have body as one project, engine as another, transmission as another, ect. You would then open the project that you want to work with to change things, then open LAM to see how it works in the big picture. Took me a while, but I am now using it for a project that is 30 000 components and counting. I get a minute or two of delay when opening, but that is far better than the crashes I was experiencing before.
I can see how it is not for everyone using SW though...just structures or assemblies with many components.

Here is another thing to look at:
By Features will expand tree and highlight selected parts.
By Dependencies won't.
