    Simulation of crushing/chipping rock load

      We are attempting to use non-linear dynamic simulation to study the interaction of a piston hitting a bit/moil which is driven into rock. Much like the way a paving breaker or rockdrill would operate. So far, we have used simple springs to represent the rock-bit interface. However, we know that the rock is irreversibly crushed (like plastic deformation) with an unloading slope which is 8-12X steeper than the loading slope. The springs do not adequately simulate this behavior.

      Does anyone have a suggestion with how the behavior of rock could be modeled?
