Is there a setting to change which layer dimensions are drawn too in Draftsight. I have a drawing that puts the dimensions on a certain layer and not the active layer.
If you have DS Pro, you may be able to do this using drawing standards, but with DS Freebie, I don't think it's possible other than with blocks (not dims as blocks, but blocks can force layers).
The only other avenue I can think of is to write a script that sets the current layer and then starts a dim.
But this isn't too practical since you can't create a toolbar button to run it and there are several dim types to run.
So, I'd say no (but hopefully, I'm incorrect) as I'm not seeing how this I done. Unless it's tied to ByBlock/ByLayer settings in the Dimstyle.
Pick another dimstyle to see if that changes things.
I am on the free version. I have tried different styles and bylayer and byblock with no avail.

Does the file that's doing this come from someone who can use DWS files and has this embedded?
In DS Freebie, the standards box is empty.
We only have the free version here. We have one user with Acad LT 2012 and it works just fine. This is the only file that has done this. It was an outside source floor plan. I can make the layer and then change it to the other. It is just a pain and looking for something easy to change.
Try renaming the dim layer and set the desired layer active.
Then run a dim command.
Does the dim command create the old layer? Or does new dim get created on the active layer?
(Probably, creates the layer again, but it's something to try.)
It goes back to the original layer. I am going to see if the other guy with Acad lt can run a dimlayer and set it to "." which will make it use the active layer.
whatever layer you want the dimensions to be on, that layer has to active, then everything you create from that point on should be on that layer. Can you attach a file for us to take a look at?
I have the layer active that I want the dimensions to be on and it still puts them on a different layer.
I created a new layer for dimension's, it acted the same as you had described, until I went over to the right and selected the layer where I have it circled in red on the far right under properties then it let me created dim's on the new layer, why I have no idea, I have never had draftsight do this before, but with this drawing, that is how it worked and could go back and fourth between layers????? try it and see if it works for you. I hope it does. Tom
I have tried changing the layers there and it still will not allow me to keep it on my layer.
I have the A-ANNO-DIM thawed and you can see the dimensions and any new dimensions go on that layer no matter what layer you have selected in the layer command. I can switch the dimensions to the new layer after they are made but this is not normal behaviour in Draftsight. It is just on this drawing and got from an outside source.
AutoCAD has the ability to set layers to specific things so you don't have to CLAYER back and forth.
It's an override, and if it's burned into the file without a setting to remove it in DS (which I'm not seeing), then I guess you're stuck with the override.
How to Set Up AutoCAD to Place Dimensions in the Correct Layer
I figured it was an Acad setting for it. Maybe can get it changed.
