Create config of assembly - mates are suppressed, but components are not

I don't understand the thought process:

I created an assembly, in which I wanted to have 3 configurations - Default, Populated and Unpopulated.

As you may have guessed, Default and Populated configurations contain all the components, whilst Unpopulated does not include some of the components.

What actually happens is that, when I suppress the components in 'Unpopulated', all the mates related to those components are suppressed in the other 2 configs, whilst the components remain unsuppressed  (Resolved). Why?

What is the justification for keeping the components, but not the mates? I'm sure it makes perfect sense, but I just can't see it.

Can someone enlighten me as to why this is intended functionality, please?

Cheers,
