Hello All,
Im looking for some guidance in modelling a coin. Im trying to make my mother a piece of art for her birthday. My plan is to model it up, increase its size and CNC it using my X-Carve. Ive looked into photo-grammetry and high resolution laser scanning. The reality is im going to have to draw the beast out. I made a YOUTUBE video of my (limited progress) which will explain it a little better. Any advice is appreciated....Tim
Hello Tim,...look into Rhino3D use your image and.."Heightfield"
..here's a example... I used the wiki image of the coin and HeightField in Rhino3D.. exported as IGES (or step) into SW and rotated/scaled (image/file attached)

Just wondering how often you use Rhino and for what? Is it part of your daily/weekly workflow?
Hello John Layne ,.. I've had it since it's inception... and use it almost every day for either importing, exporting, extracting, converting,.. whatever data which I can not or easily manipulate in SW.. and it's pretty easy to use overall.
It's also the goto 3D tool for many professional ID users and is imho (and most agree), the defacto Swiss Army Knife of 3D modeling tools..
BTW,.. the same guy (Michael Gibson) who created Rhino and left McNeel has another tool, Moi3D.. it reads/writes *.3dm (rhino3d) files and does much of what Rhino does for le$$.
Also, (forgot this).. there are other image mapping tools out there which can create nurbs surface... a free one which is mentioned in the forum is "ZSurf" .. it's pretty good.

I have used Rhino before some years back, for a small project importing a large point cloud scan. But didn't spend much time with it, unfortunately.
Appreciate the mention of the other products I'll check them out.

If you have SW2019 you could try using the new 3D Texture tool, 3D Textures with SOLIDWORKS 2019 - YouTube .
If you don't have access to a 3D scanner, I would suggest doing the sketching and extrudes.
get some clip art and do some sketch picture stuff.
make individual parts and assemble as needed..
Here is a lower resolution example in SW2019. Its important to select a photo with the appropriate contrast and resolution to get the best results.
that is why I suggest clip art...that is what a friend of mine uses to get art for is laser machine and it works better.. I had sent him some regular photos and then we went and found some equivalent clip art and it turned out so much better that the jpg.
Building on Paul's heightfield suggestion, here's a way to take multiple images to generate a normal map which can be converted to a heightmap. This will produce more accurate results (similar to 3D scanning) because the light and dark areas in a single image cannot consistently represent elevation
it is quite simple relief. on the image it is squeezed simply out on one level:-). if to be played with the level and surfaces it is possible to make worthy 3D.
