When is the diameter symbol required in the tolerance for true position?

I'm still scratching my head trying to remember when or if I've ever not used a circular tolerance zone. Can't seem to remember any..

Keyways/slots wouldn't be circular.
Also, if you want to loosen the tolerance in one direction (say, along a slot axis) but keep the other direction "tight" (square to the slot axis), then you can specify different tolerances for each direction.

Hello,
ASME.org has the standard:
Y14.5 - 2018 Dimensioning and Tolerancing
They also have a handbook that elaborates more than the standard (but the standard is the standard):
Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing Handbook: Applications, Analysis & Measurement (GDT-HDBK - 2009)
https://www.asme.org/products/books/gdthdbk-geometric-dimensioning-tolerancing
I own both and recommend both.

CORRECTION:
I have the 2009 standard, so I can't attest to the 2018 edition:
BTW, if you're attending World this year, Thomas Allsup has done several GD&T classes and knows his stuff. He might be willing to part ways with his presentation.

I recommend Al and Scott Neumann for GD&T training. They also have a their textbooks for sale, at GD&T Technical Drawing & Engineering Drafting Courses | TCI GeoTol

When you want the tolerance zone to be circular and not square.
