Is it just me, or does the centerline command in drawing mode seem random?

Sometimes it does what it says, and I'll select a couple edges and create the centerline I want.

But sometimes I'll NOT have the "Auto Insert-->Select View" checked and BOOM I get centerlines all over my view.

And sometimes I'll check the box and NOT get any centerlines anywhere.

Anyone figure out the logic to this? Or does it work normally for you?
