Fixing open surfaces to fill in complex surface

Hello,

I am working on a clone trooper helmet to 3D print, though am running into issue when I try to fill it because of open surfaces. My problem with trying to fix these is that I did not import the file, so I cannot run import diagnostics to fix the problem. I have knitted all the surfaces together and the blue edges still remain in some cases.

I am attempting to fill the object so that I can subsequently shell it and therefore have a solid part. To fill it, I have attempted the intersect, trim, and knit tool to try to create a solid, to no avail. If someone could let me know of any solution to my issue to close the volume so I can fill the object that would be great. Thanks!

(Note I have painted it red to make the blue edges easier to see)
