Mates are driving me crazy -SOLVED

I have a hydraulic cylinder, with a telescoping shaft I'm trying to mate to a rotating arm. The cylinder is mated to an fixed ear at one end with a concentric mate to mimic a pin. I'd like to mate the clevis at the end of the cyliniders telescopic shaft to an arm mounted to a rotating shaft. It refused to mate up. I even tried making the hole in the rotating arm into a slot, and use a tangent mate, but it's still no go. Does anyone out there have any experience with this sort of thing. Seems pretty simple to me, which just makes it more aggrivating.

yea, I had the same problem.. trying to remember how I solved it. I think I made sure that it wasn't in lightweight mode, made sure it was flexible, and I think I had to start suppressing mates on other parts to get it to work.. maybe suppress a mate on the rotating arm that holds it in concentric position..

strange part was I inserted it into my first assembly, no problems.. made a change to the rotating arm and all hell broke loose..

There could be a number of factors causing your headaches:
If any one of the parts isn't properly aligned, causing a slight angle...
If both parts are fixed, and the axis of the holes are off minutely...

Try a coincidence mate between the two axis. It should fail, but tell you that they are x inches (mm) off. This might point you towards your problem.

  Silly question but are the cylinder & shaft lop level parts or a sub-assembly?
  
  Have you checked that the parts (hole axis) are parallel?
  
  Another trick is to have a sketch point in the centre of the hole (clevis end) and make a coincident mate to the axis or concentric to the hole on the arm.

    If you use round about mates or complicated angles to locate your part it seems SW may decide your holes don't line up even if they should. If the above suggestions don't solve the problem I have added a point in the middle of the cylinder pin or used a combination of planes, axis and points to mate stubborn parts.

I've had problems with this type of mating as well. I eventually just decided to blame SW. It may be that the program can't handle that many mates in an kinematic chain, but doesn't know how to alert the operator about this issue.

  Ok, it's not SW's fault. Just a plain old case of operator error. I finally just forced the last concentric mate to solve. I then went and checked all the mates that had gone "red" on me, and edited them. Found my problem to be an advanced angle mate I had put between two subassemblies. Deleted that one, and I was able to unsupress a distance limit mate on the cylinder assembly to limit my overall motion. Seems to work fine now. Thanks for all the suggestions and help.

It is always a challenge to figure out when to give up and when to persevere. Chasing down mates is a major challenge in a complicated assembly.
