Excel design table locks up SolidWorks after closing. Excel closes, but then all menus will not respond. It does not always happen, but about 75-80% of the time it does. Thoughts?
You shouldn't have any blank spaces in the DT. Name the configs in the left column and make sure all of the dimensions and properties have values.
That could be part of your problem. I opened the DT twice and it didn't crash on me, 2018 SP4.
I think I have to have blank rows so that the product manager can select the values from a pull down. Make a change and try it a couple times. Crashes frequently. 2018 SP5, Office 365.
To avoid empty columns you can fill cells with dummy numbers and mark them with specific colors as object to considerations and change
if its the same issues i was having it has to do with office 365. a work around is to open design table in solidworks window not in a separate window
For me I seem to remember it always crashes if I have another Excel Document Open..
To be a little more precise:
When SW makes a design table, it places a special cell in column A. They don't give it a name, so I'll call it the special cell. I marked it "1" in the image below.
You can add as many blank rows above the special cell as you want. Or populated rows, for that matter. You can also delete all the rows above the special cell.
SW checks cells to the right of the special cell, in the same row, one by one, proceeding left to right. Where it finds a valid property definition, it will include that column for processing. Where it finds invalid characters, it stops and won't save the table. If it finds a blank cell, it stops adding columns. So it is not a blank column that defines the limit of processed properties, but just a blank cell in that row.
SW checks cells below the special cell in column A, proceeding downward. If populated, they become configuration names. If blank, SW stops adding configurations. Again it is not a blank row that defines the limit of created configurations, it is the first blank cell.
I made the mods and it still crashes about every other time. Even if I edit table in SW it opens Excel.
Maybe a daft question, but I'm presuming you've tried restarting the computer.

That's never a daft question.
I restarted the PC, always first solution, but did not work. I cleared out the blank cell in the second row and it is better, but still crashes some.
Thanks to all...
We are sorry to hear you are experiencing a crash issue with design tables. We are starting a new program (Beta for now) where we review our forums and reach out to customers having issues to help connect them with their VAR.
I have reached out to your VAR, they will be proactively contacting you soon to work with you to troubleshoot your issue.
Thanks for using the SolidWorks and the SolidWorks Forum
I am also having this problem. Editing the Design Table in a New Window frequently locks up SW2019SP2.0. I have not found a way to unlock SW, so I ended up "ending task" in Task Manager, losing all my unsaved work. I'm working on updating some of the properties in some of our configurable parts and this is driving me nuts. I previously had SW2018SP5 and I don't recall having this issue, so perhaps it's a 2019 issue? Our company uses Office 365; is it possible an update to Excel could have caused this issue? I have to imagine the Solidworks community would be crying out if every one of them was left with locked out SW sessions upon closing their Excel Design Tables. On my end, it's a pretty repeatable issue.
For what it's worth, there are no empty cells like what was found in Rodney's spreadsheet, so I don't think that's the issue. I have edited maybe 6 parts and some seem more prone to lock-ups than others. I've updated some of them with only 1 or 2 lock-ups and others I simply cannot update without lockups, preventing me from using Design Tables. Doing these edits manually (RMB on config and selecting Properties) is quite tedious.
Editing the Design Table inside Solidworks seems to help. I will edit a few cells and select the Green Check Mark and SW returns to the part document without locking up. I can then edit the Design Table in a New Window and upon closing Excel, the SW document is still unlocked. So this trick seems to help in my case.
I have this problem too. Identical to all preceding comments. Is there a solution yet?
I've found that if you first edit the table inside SW and then close/accept the table, you can then open the table in a new window and SW will not freeze up. I have not had SW ever freeze up on me when doing this little trick yet. Give this a try - it works every time for me, so far.
This is working so far. Thank-you.
No problem - good luck!
