STEP file giving me a no solid data error

Hey guys, I'm having a problem opening this step file. No matter who tries at our office we get the same issue. It says that there is no solid data and opens a blank page.

I found a thread last year where a guy was having the same problem. It turned out that his file was cut off when they looked at the file in text form. But upon opening the file in note pad I can't see anything that jumps out to me as a problem. It looks like a complete file to me. Granted I am not really well versed at reading file code. I was wondering if anyone could help me figure out why the file isn't opening? What other possibilities are there.

Daniel,

This file is only 7KB, were you expecting the file to be this small? It may not contain solid data, but just curves and/or surfaces. Do you know which application saved this STEP file?

I agree there's missing data, and confirm that it imports as an empty assembly with empty parts. I would ask for it again from the source that you got it from.

Hi Ben,

After getting more info from my boss it turns out that the file was expected to be small because it was just showing the faces of the engine that we need to modify, not the whole thing. So you were correct to assume there may not be any solid data.

Do Step files not work without solid parts? I will request that we are sent a DXF of the face if that would be better.

I tried modifying my Import Options (my default shown below) from "Try forming solid(s)" to "Do not knit" and achieved same empty results. You may fiddle with these settings and retry, but I doubt it will avail you any results.

One very broad complaint that I have about STEP files is that generally no one tests the file they've exported by importing it and checking for errors, so that the receiver gets something broken.

Again to repeat Ben's question, what application saved the STEP? That, plus its chosen export settings, influence a lot on what comes out.

We aren't sure what application the file was saved in. I'll have to try and get an answer from the company we revived it from.

And I agree that in my experience STEP files are always a bit tricky to get working correctly. I will keep the settings in mind when saving them from now on to try and make everyone lives a little easier. Ha

btw.. reading the header, it's from "SIEMENS PLM Software NX 11.0"
