I've recently been learning how to use the "sketched bend" feature in Solidworks. When I make a bend it does not remove the material I just bent, instead makes the bend, and leaves the flat sheet metal as well. Is there a way to avoid this?

Check your convert to Sheetmetal feature. Make sure you select to consume the body. In your case you do have two bodies.
SW shows the bend one and the original one. So all is as expected.

Yeah turns out I had the "keep body" box checked when I converted to sheet metal, which created two solid bodies after the flange was created. I feel so stupid. Thank you very much!
